Skincare for Dry Climates: Keeping Skin Calm Through Hot Summers and Cold Winters

Continental climates are tough on skin. A simple, season-by-season routine to keep your barrier happy.

Living in a continental climate means intense, dry summers and cold winters, and both can leave skin tight, dull and reactive. The good news: a few simple habits make a real difference.

Protect your skin barrier first

Think of your barrier as your skin’s raincoat. Skip harsh foaming cleansers and choose a gentle, low-foam cleanser. Look for moisturisers with ceramides, glycerin and squalane to lock in hydration.

Summer: hydrate and protect

Layer a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid under a light gel-cream, and never skip a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50, reapplied every two hours outdoors. Keep a mist in your bag for midday refreshes.

Winter: richer textures

Swap to a richer cream, add a facial oil at night, and protect lips and hands with a balm. A humidifier in the bedroom helps more than any serum when heating is on.

Go easy on actives

Retinoids and exfoliating acids work beautifully, but in a dry climate start slowly, two or three nights a week, and always buffer with moisturiser.

Simple, consistent and gentle beats a 12-step routine every time.

Note: this is general advice. If you have a skin condition, speak to a dermatologist.
